So remember forever ago when we said we were reading this and loving it and made it seem like we'd be finishing it ASAP? Sorry about that cause clearly life got in the way and we are just getting around to writing this review (and finishing the book).
LU: A splendid read, the The Overnight Socialite by Bridie Clark was easy for me to relate to, as it follows the theme of trying to make it in the Big Apple. Fate leads Lucy Jo Ellis to meet Wyatt Hayes. It's a pretty classic setup involving two unlikely people from different social backgrounds falling in love. I liked how Lucy Jo proves that money does not buy class, personality or talent. Add in the makeover montage and this is an excellent candidate for a chick-flick (or at least a made for TV movie). Was it predictable? Yes. Was it original? Hardly. Did I still enjoy it? Of course! I'm a total sucker for these kinds of stories.
LOLS: I am also anticipating a made-for-tv movie of this book. Cheesey, yes; predictable, yes -- but in the best way. It reminded me of a more modern version of My Fair Lady (turns out I was right!). However as a critic, today I feel like being critical. As with a lot of 'girlier' books I think it focused a little bit too much on the details of story and not enough on the characters personal development (and maybe the underlying theme of contemporary social inequality). I would have liked more insight from Lucy Jo and Wyatt's perspectives as their relationship evolved, for example. Nonetheless, it fulfilled its niche as a girly feel good story, and my craving for one.
